Dragons Abreast

Dragons Abreast, one of the first breast cancer dragonboat teams to form, was founded by Eleanor Nielsen in November 1997. During the early years, the team was able to recruit enough members to form two crews. Dragons Abreast is committed to raising awareness of the benefits of an active life after breast cancer and support for fellow breast cancer survivors through dragonboating.

A versatile and positive team with over 50 paddlers today, Dragons Abreast continues to take on new challenges. They have participated in the Outrigger Canoe Programs and Stand Up Paddling Programs and have recently created their own Rep Program in order to improve their technique, strength, and endurance. Dragons Abreast has competed in a variety of races and festivals across North America and Australia and competed in the Pan Am Championships in 2016. Their team members are also renowned paddlers individually who have participated in international races including Shanghai and Singapore.

Dedicated to improving their skills with the help of their coach Mark Klevinas, former national team sprint paddler and one of our most popular and experienced coaches at Sunnyside, they practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8 pm with an optional and additional practice on Saturdays from 8:30-10:00 am.

If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and would like to join Dragons Abreast, please contact Dragons Abreast today or visit their website.
